How do I decide how many classes to take?
The choice is yours. You will have flexibility in choosing your classes and
the times they meet. You can enroll in as few as one credit hour or as
many as 17. The following are some things to consider as you make your decision:
Usually one credit hour requires one hour of
class attendance each week and two hours a week
of homework. Laboratory, technical, and
performance classes often require more class time and
somewhat less homework time.
- If your English scores are better than average, you may need
less homework time. If you have low scores, you may
need more time.
- Working cuts into the time available for school.
If you are working 35-40 hours a week, you probably should
take no more than seven credit hours in the Fall or Winter
semester and no more than four during the Spring or
Summer.
If you are working 25-34 hours a week, you probably should
take no more than nine credit hours in the Fall or Winter
semester and no more than five during the Spring or
Summer.
If you are working 15-24 hours a week, you may be able to
handle a full-time load.
- Don't forget to consider the amount of time your personal responsibilities
require.
Count the number
of hours you have available for school and use the
guidelines above to determine the number of
credit hours appropriate for you.
