RESUME GUIDELINES

Below are resume writing tips. You may examine a sample resume. You do not have to use this format.

FORMAT

q Use a simple, easy to read font.

q Pay careful attention to spelling, punctuation, grammar, and style.

q One page is best. No more than two pages should be used. If a second page is needed, put your name and indicate page 2 at the top of the second page. Do not staple the resume you submit to the co-op office.

q Proofread your resume carefully using a dictionary and style book. Have someone else proofread it too.
REMEMBER: Spell check and grammar check do not work well for resumes. You must proofread the resume.

q Print your resume on plain white paper for the co-op office. Resumes that you submit to an employer on your own should be printed on good quality white or off-white paper.

CONTENT

q Be sure to include your name, address, phone number and email address. Choose a phone number where you can be reached or a message can be left.

q Be concise. Choose words well. Use descriptive nouns and action verbs.

q Provide clear and concise descriptions of your experiences. Do not use personal pronouns (I, me, my, etc.). Use bullets, not complete sentences.

q Tailor your resume to the job you are seeking. Be sure to include all relevant skills that relate to the job you are applying for.

q The resume should be in reverse chronological order (most recent date first).

q If your GPA is 3.0 or above, be sure and include it. If it is below 3.0, it’s best to leave it off. You can choose to list your cumulative GPA, GPA in major, or both.
