English as a Second Language (ESL)

 

Course Descriptions:

ENG 077: English 077 is a developmental course to improve pronunciation and conversational skills of non-native speakers who already have at least intermediate-level fluency in English.  This course is especially designed for those students who have learned English primarily from textbooks and who have had little opportunity for oral practice.


ENG 078: English 078 is a developmental course to prepare non-native speakers to read at an acceptable reading level for English 081.  It is required for all non-native speakers whose scores on the ESL COMPASS Reading Test fall between 70-81.  These students must take English  078 prior to or concurrently with English 091 or 092.  Laboratory work is required.


ENG 079: English 079 is a developmental course to prepare native speakers to read at an acceptable level for English 081.  Students who are placed into English 079 by their ASSET/COMPASS  test scores must take it before or concurrently with their first developmental writing course.  Laboratory work is required.         


ENG 091:  English 091 is a three–credit hour, generally non-transferable developmental writing course.  It is designed to prepare non-native speakers for English 092 or 093.  Students will learn several sentence patterns, grammatical and mechanical skills, and various methods for developing and organizing paragraphs. Supplemental laboratory assignments and conferences will be required. A grade of S (Satisfactory) is required for entry into English 092 or 093.  


ENG 092: A developmental course for students who speak English as a second language.  It is designed to prepare students to write compositions meeting English 131 and 132 objectives.  In addition to reviewing the types of skills taught in English 091, students will learn more advanced grammatical and mechanical skills and sentence patterns. These skills will be demonstrated in several types of short essays and other assignments. Supplemental laboratory work and conferences will be required.  Students must earn a grade of S (Satisfactory) before enrolling in English 131.
