Basic Directions for Using a Word Processing Program, Room L-125/H-014

NOTE: If you want to retrieve and work on your documents on computers elsewhere, you must save your work on the network (h: drive under your log-in ID) or on a floppy disk (a: drive). If you choose to save your work on a floppy, be sure to bring it to class!

Directions for Logging In

1. Turn on the hard drive (tower). (The monitor should already be on.)
2. When the HFCC “Legal Notice” box appears, click “OK.”
3. Log in with your student username (available from any of your instructors’ class rosters) and password (the two digit month and two digit date of your birth; for example, January 9th would be 0109). Hit enter.
4. If you are asked for a Windows password, click on “Cancel.”

Instead, you should save your work under your user name on the “h:” network drive or on the “a:” drive (floppy disk) as directed below. Work saved to the “h:” drive can be accessed from L-125, H-014, the Media Center (2nd floor of the library), or any other HFCC networked computer lab.

  •  Choose the “a:” drive or the “h:” drive by clicking on the arrow next to “My Documents.” Then click on the drive you want in the drop-down menu.
  •  Open the folder you’d like to save your current document in, or create a new folder and open it. (Your goal is to organize your documents by grouping related documents together.)
  • Enter a file name for your document that is no longer than eight characters. Leave off the three-character extension, which will be added automatically.
  • Note that if you are simply replacing a previous version with a new version, all you will need to do is select Save from the File Menu.

4. To save a new version of an existing document under a new name (so that you will have saved both the old and the new versions) or to a new drive, select Save As, not Save, from the File Menu and proceed as in step 3.

5. Pull down on File Menu to Close the document.
