English 135, Business and Technical Writing, is one option students have for satisfying their second-semester composition requirement for graduation. Essentially, it is a course in workplace or professional writing. Students are asked to analyze workplace writing situations and audiences and then to develop writing strategies that fit those audiences’ needs and expectations. English 135 is unique in that it moves beyond merely considering words as a form of expression; in addition, it considers how integral page design and visual aids, such as photos, tables, and graphs, are to effective workplace writing.

Students can opt for different class formats as well: a traditional, face-to-face format; a hybrid format, in which half of the class is taught face-to-face and the other half is taught on line using a class Web site; and a distance education format, in which 95% of the class is taken online. Students opting for the hybrid or distance education format must have reliable Internet access and some experience using e-mail; they should also have WordPerfect or Microsoft Word software.

English 135 provides students with an excellent opportunity to enhance their computer skills and to expand their knowledge of writing formats while simultaneously writing about practical issues they encounter on the job and in their courses. Students with questions about the course should feel free to contact the English 135 Committee Chair, Betsy Cohn (313-845-9886 or bcohn@hfcc.edu).
