IF YOU ARE TAKING THE COURSE PLACEMENT TEST
FOR THE FIRST TIME,
PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY

The Course Placement Test at Henry Ford Community College is comprised of three parts, including Writing Skills, Reading Skills, and Mathematics Skills. All new students must complete all three sections of the test. Henry Ford Community College offers two different kinds of placement tests; one is on the computer (COMPASS) and the other is paper and pencil (ASSET). Listed below are the descriptions of each version.

COMPASS TEST

  • The test is untimed. You may work at your own pace.
  • The test is given on a computer.
  • You may use a calculator on the Mathematics test.
  • All questions are multiple-choice.

ASSET TEST

  • The test is timed. 25 minutes is allowed for each section.
  • This test uses a booklet and a Scantron sheet.
  • You may not use a calculator on the Mathematics test.
  • All questions are multiple-choice.

Testing takes approximately two hours for all three sections. You are NOT required to take all three sections in one sitting.

You must select the COMPASS test if you are trying to test into MATH 121 (Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I), MATH 153 (Calculus for Business, Life, and Social Science), MATH 175 (Pre-Calculus), or MATH 180 (Calculus I).

Please note that you must wait 90 days to re-test. Only counselors and appropriate associate deans may waive this waiting period. If you have any further questions, please ask one of the secretaries before starting the test.  If you have proof of an ACT test score of 21 or higher in English, reading and writing assessment will be waived.

If you have proof of an ACT test score of 21 or higher in mathematics, you will not be required to take a mathematics placement test unless you wish to enroll in MATH 121, MATH 153, MATH 175, or MATH 180, in which case you must take the COMPASS test.
