1. Code Shifting.  Competent speakers and writers learn to “code shift.”  There is language they use in their home and community; and then there is a language they use in school and the workplace.  Both languages serve important purposes.  Both identify the speaker with a group, earning him/her acceptance as a recognized “voice.”  Careful speakers and writers know when and where to use which language.
